Tour Overview:
Your Ramasside tour guide will greet you directly at Borg El Arab Airport (HBE) and escort you on a comprehensive layover excursion to the world-renowned Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the Roman Amphitheatre, and Saint Mark’s Church—the oldest church in Africa. Explore the vibrant historic downtown quarters, the Mosque of Nabi Daniel, and the grand Abbo Elabbas Mosque, before admiring the royal Montaza Palace and Gardens and the scenic Mediterranean shoreline. Your excursion concludes with a timely, comfortable return transfer to the airport or your hotel.
Your Ramasside guide will meet you outside the arrivals hall at Borg El Arab Airport. Begin your journey visiting the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the world’s largest library housing a collection of over 8 million volumes. Walk through the open courtyards to see colossal submerged antiquities salvaged from the Mediterranean seabed, including statues of Alexander the Great and Ptolemy I.
Tour the library's vast multi-tiered reading hall, the Sadat Museum, and the Alex Impressions exhibition.
(Note: The Bibliotheca Alexandrina is closed on Fridays and all public holidays).
Proceed to the Roman Amphitheatre of Alexandria at Kom El-Dikka, viewing its marble seating tiers, historic mosaics, and Roman-era sunken antiquities recovered from Alexandria's Eastern Harbor.
Drive next to Saint Mark’s Coptic Orthodox Church, the oldest church in Africa, founded by the apostle Saint Mark. From there, take a walking tour through the old downtown streets of Alexandria, admiring the historic streetscape influenced by Italian, French, and Baroque architectural styles. Explore vibrant local bazaars offering regional pastries and traditional foods.
Visit the Mosque of Nabi Daniel, steeped in local tradition and historical theories linking it to the lost tomb of Alexander the Great, as well as the resting place of the venerated sage Sidi Lokman.
(Optional: Enjoy lunch at an upscale seaside seafood restaurant, or taste authentic Egyptian foul and falafel at the celebrated "Mohamed Ahmed" restaurant, a culinary staple visited by celebrities and the Queen of Spain).
(Optional: Relax at a traditional Egyptian cafe or shisha lounge).
Continue through the historic commercial district of El Mansheya and delve into the bustling alleys of Zan'et El-Setat—the legendary women's market famous for bridal accessories, traditional textiles, and gold souks.
Head toward the grandiose Abbo Elabbas Mosque, the largest and most decorative mosque in the city. Across the plaza, see the nostalgic heritage fairgrounds where local children ride vintage carousels.
Across the street, take in the lively atmosphere along the historic port and Corniche. Watch traditional wooden fishing boats bobbing in the water and local fishermen hand-mending their nets—an exceptional opportunity for authentic documentary photography. Continue to the exterior grounds of the 15th-century Citadel of Qaitbay, erected on the very foundation of the ancient Pharos Lighthouse (one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World).
Board your vehicle toward the Montaza Palace and Gardens. Along the route, enjoy a brief stop at "King of Mango" for a cup of freshly squeezed juice and stop for photos at the Unknown Soldier Memorial.
As you travel the 30-kilometer Corniche, enjoy sweeping views of Alexandria's shoreline, underneath which lie an estimated 7,000 submerged artifacts and royal palaces.
Arrive at the lush Montaza Royal Gardens (often referred to as the "Garden of Love"), the historic seaside estate of King Farouk, the last reigning monarch of Egypt. View the architectural facades of the Haramlik and Salamlik palaces, walk across the iconic Montaza Bridge, and view the Tea Palace Island and royal beaches.
On the return journey, pause for photos at the modern landmark of Alexandria—the illuminated Stanley Bridge—before transferring comfortably back to Borg El Arab Airport for your onward flight or to your hotel in Alexandria.
