Tour Overview:
Begin your full-day excursion from Cairo to Alexandria visiting the modern Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the world’s largest library. Explore premier archaeological landmarks including the Roman Amphitheatre and Saint Mark’s Church, and take a guided walk through the traditional markets and downtown streets of the ancient city. Enjoy lunch at a contemporary seafood venue or an authentic local institution before discovering Montaza Palace and Gardens, passing iconic coastal sights such as the Citadel of Qaitbay and Abbo Elabbas Mosque, followed by a comfortable return drive to Cairo.
Your driver and Egyptologist guide will pick you up directly from your hotel in Cairo to travel via the Desert Highway to Alexandria.
Your first stop is the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, housing a vast repository of approximately 8 million volumes. Visit the open exterior plaza to view monumental submerged statues of Alexander the Great and Ptolemy I, raised from the nearby seabed. Your guide will highlight the distinctive architecture and granite engravings of the building's facade, with time allocated for photos.
(Note: The Bibliotheca Alexandrina is closed on Fridays and public holidays. Entry into the reading room requires an on-site supplementary ticket).
Next, explore the Roman Amphitheatre of Alexandria at Kom El-Dikka, viewing its marble spectator tiers and an open-air display of sunken antiquities recovered from the Eastern Harbor.
Continue to Saint Mark’s Coptic Orthodox Church, celebrated as the oldest church in Africa, followed by a walking tour through Alexandria's historic downtown. Stroll through bustling traditional souks selling regional sweets, spices, and artisan products, surrounded by historic buildings blending Baroque, Italian, and French architectural elements.
Lunch options include dining at a modern seaside seafood restaurant or visiting the celebrated "Mohamed Ahmed" restaurant, a culinary staple visited by celebrities and the Queen of Spain.
(Optional: Relax at an authentic Egyptian cafe or shisha lounge).
Continue through Alexandria's oldest marketplace in El Mansheya and delve into Zan'et El-Setat (the historic women's market) in the narrow alleyways, alongside the bustling gold souk where local jewelry is crafted for weddings and celebrations.
Pass by the grand Abbo Elabbas Mosque for a photo stop, admiring the city's largest Islamic architectural sanctuary. Across the plaza, observe the vintage carnival grounds where local families gather and children enjoy classic carousels.
Across the street, take in panoramic views of the Mediterranean waterfront and the historic Eastern Harbor, where wooden fishing vessels dock and local fishermen hand-mend their nets. Proceed to the 15th-century Citadel of Qaitbay, erected on the exact site of the ancient Pharos Lighthouse—one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
Travel along the coastal Corniche toward the Montaza Palace and Gardens. Enjoy a brief two-minute stop to taste fresh juice at Alexandria's famous "King of Mango" and stop for photos at the Unknown Soldier Memorial. The 25-kilometer coastal drive passes above the ancient sunken port where over 7,000 submerged artifacts have been identified.
Arrive at the lush Montaza Royal Gardens, often called the "Gardens of Love." Tour the royal grounds of King Farouk (the last reigning monarch of Egypt), view the exterior facades of the Haramlik and Salamlik palaces, walk across the iconic Montaza Bridge, and view Tea Palace Island and the royal beachfront.
On the return drive, cross the illuminated Stanley Bridge—the modern architectural landmark of Alexandria—before your comfortable private drive back to your hotel in Cairo.
