Tour Overview:
Depart from Cairo on an exclusive full-day private excursion to Alexandria to discover its classical wonders. Visit the rock-cut Catacombs of Kom El-Shoqafa, the Roman Amphitheatre, Pompey’s Pillar, and the world-renowned Bibliotheca Alexandrina. Continue to Saint Mark’s Church, the ornate Abbo Elabbas Mosque, and the exterior battlements of the Citadel of Qaitbay. Admire the royal Montaza Palace and Gardens along Alexandria's scenic Mediterranean coastline before returning comfortably to your hotel in Cairo.
Your private Egyptologist guide and driver will pick you up directly from your hotel lobby in Cairo to begin your journey along the Desert Highway to Alexandria.
Your first visit is the Catacombs of Kom El-Shoqafa, the largest Roman funerary complex in Egypt, carved three levels deep into solid bedrock and showcasing a distinctive fusion of Greco-Roman and ancient Egyptian artistic motifs. Next, explore the Roman Amphitheatre of Alexandria at Kom El-Dikka, viewing its marble seating tiers and open-air displays of sunken artifacts recovered from the Mediterranean seabed. Stop nearby for photographs at Pompey’s Pillar, a towering granite memorial erected at the close of the 4th century AD in honor of Emperor Diocletian.
Proceed to the iconic Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the world’s largest library housing an extensive collection of 8 million volumes. Walk through the open exterior plaza to view monumental submerged statues of Alexander the Great and Ptolemy I raised from the harbor floor. Tour the President Anwar Sadat Museum and the Alex Impressions exhibition.
(Note: The Bibliotheca Alexandrina is closed on public holidays. Entrance to the main reading hall requires an on-site supplementary ticket).
Drive to Saint Mark’s Coptic Orthodox Church, celebrated as the oldest church in Africa. Along the route, admire the historic downtown streetscape featuring Baroque facades alongside Italian and French colonial architectural influences.
(Optional: Enjoy lunch at a contemporary seaside seafood restaurant or visit the celebrated "Mohamed Ahmed" restaurant, a local institution famous for traditional Egyptian fare and visited by dignitaries and royalty, including the Queen of Spain).
Pass by the grand Abbo Elabbas Mosque for photographs, admiring the city's largest and most ornate Islamic landmark. Across from the mosque plaza, notice the vintage seaside carnival grounds where local children play on classic rides.
Across the street, take in panoramic views of the Mediterranean waterfront and the historic Eastern Harbor, where wooden fishing vessels dock and local fishermen hand-mend their nets. Continue to the 15th-century Citadel of Qaitbay, erected on the exact site of the ancient Pharos Lighthouse—one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Capture photos against the fortress walls and the open sea.
Travel along the coastal Corniche toward the Montaza Palace and Gardens. Enjoy a brief two-minute stop to taste fresh mango juice at Alexandria's famous "King of Mango" and stop for photos at the Unknown Soldier Memorial. Enjoy scenic coastline views along the 25-kilometer drive, passing above submerged coastal ruins where over 7,000 antiquities have been recorded.
Arrive at the lush Montaza Royal Gardens, often called the "Gardens of Love." Tour the royal grounds of King Farouk (the last reigning monarch of Egypt), view the exterior facades of the Haramlik and Salamlik palaces, walk across the iconic Montaza Bridge, and view Tea Palace Island and the royal beachfront.
On the return drive, cross the illuminated Stanley Bridge—the modern architectural landmark of Alexandria—before your comfortable private drive back to your hotel in Cairo.
(Note: We recommend wearing comfortable, closed flat walking shoes. The itinerary can be adjusted or expanded with additional sites upon request).
