Tour Overview:
Your Ramasside tour guide will pick you up directly from your hotel to start an enriching historical journey across Alexandria. Begin at the world-renowned Graeco-Roman Museum, housing a vast collection of ancient Greek and Roman antiquities, including marble statues of Alexander the Great, Roman imperial artifacts, and mummies. Continue to the modern Bibliotheca Alexandrina to visit its open plaza, view submerged statues of Alexander the Great and Ptolemy I, and admire the unique exterior architecture. Next, visit Saint Mark’s Church—the oldest church in Africa—and explore the traditional bazaars and distinctive architecture of Alexandria's historic downtown. Pause for photos at the grand Abbo Elabbas Mosque and visit the coastal Citadel of Qaitbay before returning comfortably to your hotel.
Your Ramasside guide will meet you in your hotel lobby to begin your excursion.
First, visit the Graeco-Roman Museum, which displays thousands of rare masterworks dating from the 3rd century BC through the 7th century AD. Explore remarkable sculptures of Alexander the Great, imperial Roman busts, mosaic pavements, and preserved mummies from the Hellenistic and Roman periods, providing a captivating narrative of Alexandria's role in the classical Mediterranean world.
Next, drive to the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the world’s largest library housing an extensive collection of 8 million volumes. Walk through the open exterior plaza to view the colossal underwater statues of Alexander the Great and Ptolemy I, salvaged from the seabed of the Eastern Harbor. Learn about the building's striking cylindrical design engraved with characters from world scripts, with ample time for photographs.
(Note: The Bibliotheca Alexandrina is closed on Fridays and public holidays. Entry to the main reading hall requires an on-site supplementary ticket).
Board your vehicle to visit Saint Mark’s Coptic Orthodox Church, celebrated as the oldest church in Africa. Continue with a guided walking tour through the old quarters of Alexandria, wandering through vibrant traditional markets offering regional pastries and local street specialties. Admire the historic streetscapes featuring Baroque facades alongside Italian and French colonial architectural influences.
(Optional: Enjoy lunch at a contemporary seaside seafood restaurant, or taste authentic Egyptian cuisine at the celebrated "Mohamed Ahmed" restaurant, a local institution visited by royalty and dignitaries including the Queen of Spain).
Continue past the grand Abbo Elabbas Mosque for a photo stop. Admire its majestic domes alongside the nostalgic vintage seaside fairgrounds where local children ride classic carousels.
Across the street, take in sweeping views of the historic harbor where traditional wooden fishing boats dock and local fishermen hand-mend their nets. Proceed to the 15th-century Citadel of Qaitbay, erected on the exact site of the ancient Pharos Lighthouse—one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Tour the outer fortress walls, a prime vantage point for photography across the Mediterranean.
At the end of your tour, enjoy a comfortable drive back to your hotel in Alexandria.
(Note: We recommend wearing comfortable, closed flat walking shoes. The itinerary can be adjusted or expanded with additional sites upon request).
