Tour Overview:
Your private Ramasside tour guide will pick you up from your hotel to begin an enriching city excursion to the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the Roman Amphitheatre, and Saint Mark’s Church. Wander through Alexandria's historic downtown, visit bustling traditional markets, and experience authentic local culinary traditions. Along the way, view the grand Abbo Elabbas Mosque, the Citadel of Qaitbay, and the lush Montaza Palace and Gardens before returning comfortably to your hotel.
Your Ramasside guide will meet you in your hotel lobby to start your sightseeing journey at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the world’s largest library housing an extensive collection of 8 million volumes. In the open exterior plaza, see the colossal statues of Alexander the Great and Ptolemy I salvaged from underwater excavations near the harbor. Learn about the iconic architecture and symbolic world alphabets carved into its granite facade, with ample time for photos.
(Note: The Bibliotheca Alexandrina is closed on Fridays and public holidays. Entrance to the main reading hall requires an on-site supplementary ticket).
Next, visit the Roman Amphitheatre of Alexandria at Kom El-Dikka, featuring marble spectator terraces, historic mosaic pavements, and open-air displays of sunken Roman-era antiquities raised from the Eastern Harbor.
Drive to Saint Mark’s Coptic Orthodox Church, celebrated as the oldest church in Africa, before setting off on a guided walking tour through historic downtown Alexandria. Stroll through traditional markets selling local goods, spices, and authentic Egyptian sweets. The surrounding streets reflect a blend of Baroque, Italian, and French architectural styles.
(Optional: Enjoy lunch at an upscale Mediterranean seafood restaurant or visit the celebrated "Mohamed Ahmed" restaurant, a historic local institution visited by royalty and celebrities including the Queen of Spain).
(Optional: Take a relaxing break at an authentic Egyptian cafe or shisha lounge).
Continue through Alexandria's oldest commercial district in El Mansheya and explore the vibrant lanes of Zan'et El-Setat (the historic women's market) alongside the sparkling gold souk where locals shop for wedding jewelry.
Pass by the grand Abbo Elabbas Mosque for photographs, admiring the city's largest and most ornate Islamic sanctuary. Next to the plaza, see the nostalgic vintage fairgrounds where local children enjoy classic rides.
Across the street, take in panoramic views of the Mediterranean waterfront and the historic Eastern Harbor, where wooden fishing vessels dock and local fishermen hand-mend their nets. Proceed to the 15th-century Citadel of Qaitbay, erected on the foundations of the ancient Pharos Lighthouse—one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
Travel along the coastal Corniche toward the Montaza Palace and Gardens. Along the route, enjoy a brief stop to taste fresh juice at Alexandria's famous "King of Mango" and stop for photos at the Unknown Soldier Memorial. Enjoy scenic coastline views along the 25-kilometer route, passing above ancient submerged ruins where over 7,000 antiquities have been recorded.
Arrive at the lush Montaza Royal Gardens, often called the "Gardens of Love." Tour the royal grounds of King Farouk (the last reigning monarch of Egypt), view the exterior facades of the Haramlik and Salamlik palaces, walk across the iconic Montaza Bridge, and view Tea Palace Island and the royal beachfront.
On the return drive, cross the illuminated Stanley Bridge—the modern architectural landmark of Alexandria—before your comfortable drop-off back at your hotel.
(Note: We recommend wearing comfortable, closed flat walking shoes. The itinerary can be adjusted or expanded with additional sites upon request).
